Eliminate Green Mold With These 3 Tips

Date

get rid of green mold

Like black and white mold, green mold can be toxic to humans as well as animals. Exposure to its mycotoxins creates health problems and other issues.

It is not easy to recognize these types of mold visually. Why? Because colors of mold appear differently on various surfaces.

What is Green Mold, and is it Dangerous?

The term green mold does not point to a particular type of species of mold. It refers to more than one hundred types of species of fungi with green or greenish-hued spores. Its appearance seems soft and fuzzy or powdery. Green mold thrives in damp areas of a home and on food like bread, vegetables and fruit, and many others.

Some of the common types of mold with green-colored spores include Cladosporium, Aspergillus, and Penicillium. However, not all members of these mold types appear green or greenish.

Some mold members of Penicillium and Aspergillus may look blue. They could be referred to as blue mold. Likewise, some mold types of Cladosporium may appear black, hence the term black mold or known as Stachybotrys chartarum. Black mold is prevalent in water-damaged properties.

Green mold in the home is indeed irritating. It can lower the market value of your property. Furthermore, it can ruin many items like furniture, upholstery or fabrics, and even your favorite book collections.

Are there health impacts connected with green mold? Certainly!

If your immune system is sensitive and unstable, you will likely be susceptible to respiratory issues such as sinus infections, pneumonia, lung inflammation, and other lung problems. Also, continuous exposure to some mold types can give you allergic reactions.

So once you see green mold growing in and plaguing your home, make haste and eliminate it immediately.

How to Get Rid of Green Mold

Eliminating green mold must be a priority! You do not want it to invade your lovely home. The following tips below may help you as you try to follow them:

1. The source of mold growth is moisture. Check if your house has any plumbing leaks, cracks in the foundation, or breaks in the window base. Repair them at once to avoid dampness in the home.

2. You can use fungicide and vacuum with a HEPA filter to clean severe mold patches at home. HEPA filter restricts mold spores from flying around and filling the air.

3. You may use DIY home remedies to remove small mold colonies.

  • Baking Soda Solution

Mix one part baking soda with one part water into a spray bottle and spray the solution straight on the mold. Let it sit for about ten minutes before wiping it away with a wet sponge. Redo the entire process until you no longer see any mold. Airdry the affected area thoroughly.

  • Vinegar solution

Combine 50% vinegar with 50% water into a spray bottle, and spray the solution on the affected surface. Leave it for about an hour. Then rub the surface using a wet sponge.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide Solution

In a spray bottle, mix hydrogen peroxide (3%) with water. Spray the solution on the moldy areas in your home and wait for about ten minutes before wiping down the mold using a wet sponge or cloth. Then repeat wiping with a clean, dry cloth to remove the remaining spores.

Note that hydrogen peroxide solution will bleach carpeting and upholstery, so avoid using it for the said items.

Discard all the cloths and sponges used in mold removal. After cleaning, you may apply antifungal paint to prevent the mold from returning and infesting any site in your home.
